BC3. Basque centre for climate change – Klima aldaketa ikergai

The 3^rd Session of the World Summit of Regions, under the title New Technologies and Renewable Energy, dealt with the following question:

The absolute necessity of coming up with more sustainable and environmentally-friendly economic development methods provides an original and promising scope of action for sectors working on technologies which emit less greenhouse gases and reduce their environmental footprint. How are Regions preparing for the use of renewable energy at this time of climatic urgency? What priorities do they have in preparing the impending energy revolution that will turn systems in place since the beginning of the 20^th century on their head?

In this session, Prof Anil Markandya was invited as an expert and the following regional experiences were presented:

• Euskadi: New branches of renewable power production, Jose Antonio Sainz de Ormijana, Energy Expert, Basque Energy Board (EVE)
• Scotland: Power production using marine technologies
• Wales: Climate Change Activities and Low Carbon, Sustainable Energy in Wales – a small country’s smart approach’. Jane Davidson, Environment Minister
• Reunion: The objective of energy self-sufficiency in 2020 for an island in the Indian Ocean
• Brittany: The social acceptability of marine technologies, a condition for the future
• Sao Paulo: “Sustainable ethanol”, Oswaldo Lucon
• Mexico: Francisco Javier Diaz Carvajal, Secretario de la Provincia de Quintana Roo y Coordinador de ANNAE
• India: Integrated Master Plan for Developing Solar Cities in Gujarat and Chandigarh, Amit Kumar
