Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Nurturing a Shift towards Equitable Valuation of Nature in the Anthropocene (EQUIVAL)

The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), offers a one year full-time postdoctoral research fellowship with the level of financial support according to the academic and professional profile of the applicant.

In order to secure more ethical and more effective approaches for nature conservation, in a context of global economic and environmental change, social equity and environmental justice need to be acknowledged as key aspects in environmental governance across scales. This involves creating transparent and participatory mechanisms that recognize the diversity of voices and worldviews about human-nature relations. As regards ecosystem governance, this implies that there is a need to promote valuation of biodiversity (a shorthand for nature or any biotic system as seen by modern science, or other knowledge systems) as an equitable proces in terms of recognition of worldviews, guaranteeing transparent participation of stakeholders, and being mindful of the distribution of impacts on wellbeing due to valuation-based ecosystem management decisions.  EQUIVAL aims at co-construcing knowledge among scientists and decision makers about how equitable valuation can help design more just and cost-effective conservation policy instruments.

The postdoctoral researcher will work in the project EQUIVAL, part of Future Earth’s PEGASUS program. EQUIVAL aligns with Future Earth’s Natural Assets challenge by seeking to advance knowledge co-generation among scientist, decision makers and end-users, about the relationships between equitable valuation of nature and effective environmental governance in biodiversity hotspots in the Global South. This will be done through active engagement of partners involved in EQUIVAL with Future Earth core projects such as PECS and ecoSERVICES, as well as through partners that belong to the Future Earth outreach committee and very close links to IPBES. Other key partners include Swedbio of the Stockholm Resilience Center, the German Society for International Cooperation GIZ and UNESCO, among others.

The postdoctoral researcher will work under the supervision of Prof. Unai Pascual (Basque Centre for Climate Change, BC3) and Prof. Patty Balvanera (Institute for Ecosystem and Sustainability Research, National Autonomous University of Mexico, UNAM). The researcher would be physically located in Bilbao at the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3).

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to:

  • Plan and implement research with other team members:
