Elisa Sainz de Murieta

Elisa Sainz de Murieta Climate policy so far has been largely focused on the ways to mitigate climate change. However, even if there were a major step forward in mitigation, residual impacts are expected so adaptation policy should become a priority in policy making if we want to avoid major environmental and socio-economic impacts.
In this context, the best scientific knowledge together with policy-oriented research is essential as a basis for decision making and the definition of public policies.

Short CV

Elisa Sainz de Murieta holds a PhD in Geological Sciences (Geo-economics) from the University of the Basque Country (2016). Her thesis dissertation assessed the environmental and economic impacts of sea-level rise on the Basque Coast.

Elisa obtained a BSc. in Geological Sciences from the University of the Basque Country in 2001 and then she moved to Madrid to study a Master course in Environmental Engineering and Management at the School of Industrial Organization in Madrid. In 2002 she joined an industrial business group, where she was in charge of quality management related issues, and in 2005 she was appointed General Director of Biodiversity of the Basque Government. After working as a policy-maker, in 2009 she decided to explore the world of the academia and started a new Master course on Quaternary and Environmental Change studies.

Elisa joined the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) In 2010 with the aim of developing her PhD. During her period at BC3, she has also been involved in several research projects related to the economics of adaptation and the economic valuation of ecosystem services (e.g. Climbe, Econadapt).

Her current main interests are related to exploring the science-climate policy interface, as well as assessing the impacts and adaptation policies for coastal areas. She is also interested in the Anthropocene and the facts behind this potential new geological epoch.
