Understanding its causes and consequences, and contributing to its mitigation is not only a challenge but a duty that scientists from different areas have with future generations.

CURRICULUM VITAE

  • Ramon Ortiz is an environmental economist with experience in research and consulting in a range of environmental issues.
  • He holds a PhD in Environmental Economics and MSc in Economics as well as degrees in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science.
  • His research interests involve health impacts of air pollution and climate change; environmental valuation techniques; energy efficiency issues; land use and land use change with special interest in forestry, agriculture and tourism; competitiveness impact of environmental regulation and market based instruments for environmental management.
  • He has actively participated in several EC research projects such as
    • ‘SENSOR – Sustainability impact assessment: tools for environmental, social and economic effects of multifunctional land use in European regions’;
    •  ‘NEEDS – New energy externalities developments for Sustainability’;
    •  ‘VERHI – Valuation of Environment-Related Health Impacts on Children’;
    • ‘NewExt - External costs from major accidents in non-nuclear fuel chains’.
  • Ramon is currently a Researcher at BC3 and a Visiting Fellow at the University of Bath, UK, after being a Research Officer in the Department of Economics and International Development at the same university for three years.
  • As a Brazilian national, Ramon has worked with IPEA, the main research institute for applied economics in Brazil, conducting several environmental valuation exercises at conservation units and researching in areas such as deforestation in the Amazon forest, air pollution related health impacts in metropolitan regions, payments for environmental service and land use issues.
  • Projects include ‘Integrated environmental strategies (IES) for Brazil: the economic impact of PROCONVE on air pollution health effects in São Paulo, Brazil’, ‘Identifying health effects of the use of fire in sugar-cane crops in Brazil’, ‘Economic analysis of the costs of fire at the Brazilian Amazon’, and ‘Evaluation of the benefits associated with the Centres for environmental protection (CDA) of the Brazilian oil company (Petrobras)’.
  • He has also worked as an expert consultant with multilateral organisations such as the World Bank, WWF, UNEP and UNESCO.
