BC3. Basque centre for climate change – Klima aldaketa ikergai

The first edition of the "International Spring University on Ecosystem Services Modeling" will be held from the 11^th to the 22^nd of March at Bizkaia Aretoa in Bilbao.

It is organized by BC3 , The UNESCO Chair on "Sustainable Development and Environmental Education” of the University of the Basque Country and the City Hall of Bilbao, with the collaboration of other international academic and non-profit organizations,and will gather 39 experts on Ecosystem Services Modeling from all over the world.

The International Spring University on Ecosystem Services modeling (ISU-ES) 2013 is the first edition of an annual 2-week intensive course that aims to build a new generation of actors ,in research, policy and management, who can profitably use ecosystem services models to address and solve sustainability problems. The course will follow a problem-based paradigm, learning the most advanced ES modeling techniques from theory and practice using case studies defined by the participants.

BC3 Basque Centre for Climate Change is leading the development of some of the most advanced methodologies to quantify and value the flows of beneficial services that natural ecosystems provide to societies. While the methods developed are reaching high degrees of sophistication, the skills required to perform an assessment remain in the hands of only few people. In two weeks of intensive instructions, participants will master the modeling  language that runs the ARIES modeling platform (http://www.ariesonline.org) and learn how to effectively model ES problems of different scope and scale. At their discretion, the participants will have the option of continuing interaction with the ARIES consortium to contribute to the largest worldwide public repository of models and data on ecosystem services.

El Prof. Unai Pascual, alerta de que es un peligro 'real' que se está 'acelerando'

El investigador de Ikerbasque adscrito al Centro Vasco para el Cambio Climático BC3, Unai Pascual ha advertido de que "el cambio climático esta aquí. No es una cosa del futuro y se está acelerando".

Froga zientifikoek adierazten dute tenperatura errekorrak hausten jarraitzen dutela, poloetako izotza espero baino bizkorrago urtzen ari dela eta itsas maila hainbat proiekziok aurreikusitakoa baino gehiago goratzen ari dela. Gainera, planeta ez da bilakaera eraginkorrik lortzen ari mende amaieran batez besteko tenperatura globalaren igoera 2 gradu zentigradoren azpitik atxikitzeko xedean. The Scientific Director of BC3, Professor Anil Markandya, has been appointed to the Scientific Council of the European Environment Agency for a period of four years.  The European Environment Agency (EEA) is an agency of the European Union. Our task is to provide sound, independent information on the environment. We are a major information source for those involved in developing, adopting, implementing and evaluating environmental policy, and also the general public. Currently, the EEA has 32 member countries, 219 staff and a budget of around 60 million euros.  The scientific council assiss the Management Board and the Executive Director by providing scientific advice and delivering professional opinion on any scientific matter relating to the work of the agency.

Paul Wilkinson es sincero cuando dice que las medidas que se adopten en las dos próximas décadas no serán suficientes, pero cree que el cambio climático está en su fase inicial y que aún es posible mitigar sus efectos sobre la salud, los ecosistemas o la cohesión social, por ejemplo.

El 21 de Noviembre se celebra Klimagune Conferences, de la mano del Ayuntamiento de Bilbao y de BC3, Basque Centre for Climate Change – Centro de Excelencia en Investigación del Cambio Climático.
Paul Wilkinson, Profesor de Epidemiología Ambiental en la London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, y el Dr. Ramon Aldamiz-Echevarria, Jefe de  Sanidad Ambiental e Higiene Urbana del Ayuntamiento de Bilbao analizarán los desafíos que el Cambio Climático presenta en el ámbito de la Salud Pública.

Expertos de 56 países se dan cita en España para la próxima reunión del Grupo Intergubernamental sobre Cambio Climático de la ONU


Los informes de evaluación de este grupo de expertos dieron lugar a las negociaciones para el Protocolo de Kioto y tras la publicación del último de ellos la organización recibió el Premio Nobel de la Paz.

El centro de investigación Economics for Energy y la Universidade de Vigo colaboran en la organización del encuentro, que cuenta con el apoyo del Ministerio de Agricultura, Alimentación y Medio Ambiente, y BC3, Basque Centre for Climate Change.

Se trata de una iniciativa que permitirá avanzar en el conocimiento y modelización de los distintos ecosistemas para un uso más racional yeficiente de los recursos naturales.

La ‘International Spring University on Ecosystem Services Modeling’ ha sido impulsada por el Ayuntamiento de Bilbao, el Centro de InvestigaciónBasque Center for Climate Change BC3 y la Cátedra UNESCO sobre “Desarrollo sostenible y educación ambiental” de la UPV/EHU, con lacolaboración de la Universidad de Vermont y las organizaciones Earth Economics y Conservation International.
