Former BC3 researcher

Roger Fouquet

Main Research Field:
Long-term relationships between economic development, technological change, energy consumption and climate change

Was employee in BC3 from 2009-06-01 to 2015-12-03

CURRICULUM VITAE

  • Roger Fouquet received his BA (Economics with Mathematics) in 1990 from the University of Sussex, his MSc (Energy Economics) in 1991 and his PhD (Economics: Modelling of Energy Demand for Environmental Policies) in 1997 both from the University of Surrey.
  • He was a researcher at the University of Surrey between 1992 and 1996. His main projects there were (i) modelling and forecasting energy demand and its carbon dioxide emissions, (ii) analyzing the socio-economic factors associated with variations in health problems and avoidable mortalities, (iii) studying the willingness to pay for safety from nuclear accidents.
  • He was a research fellow at the Centre for Environmental Technology and Centre for Energy Policy & Technology in Imperial College London from 1995 to 2005. There, he worked on a series of projects related to energy and environmental issues, including investigating energy demand at different stages of economic development.
  • Roger was seconded to the UK´s Department of Trade and Industry (Environment and Industry Branch) in 1994 and to the UK´s Carbon Trust (Strategy Team) in 2001.
  • He was a senior lecturer at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji between 2005 and 2008. He has also lectured microeconomics, energy, resource and environmental economics, and econometrics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Europe, North Africa, South-East Asia since 1996.
  • He has been the Editor of the Energy Economics section of the New Economic Papers nep.repec.org (the world’s largest electronic catalogue of economic working papers and journal articles) since 1998.
  • In 1996, he was awarded the BIEE/Financial Times Andrew Holmes Memorial Award for his research into the impact of liberalisation on the green electricity market.
  • In 2006, his joint article with Peter Pearson on very long run trends in lighting prices and consumption was chosen for the annual Campbell Watkins Award for Best Paper in The Energy Journal (the official journal of the International Association of Energy Economists (IAEE)).
  • In 2008, he completed Fouquet, R. (2008) Heat, Power and Light: Revolutions in Energy Services. Edward Elgar Publications. Cheltenham, UK, and Northampton, MA, USA. Based on evidence over the past seven hundred years, a key idea in the book is the tendency for markets to find ways of consuming energy more efficiently, producing ever-cheaper energy services and, in the long run, consuming greater amounts of energy - with significant effects on wellbeing and the environment. It has been described as a ¨monumental work of policy-relevant scholarship¨ and has been selected by Choice Magazine, the official publication of the Association of College and Research Libraries, as one of its Outstanding Academic Titles for 2009.
  • From March 2013, he will be on long-term leave from BC3 and will be a Principal Research Fellow, Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, London School of Economics (LSE).
