Short CV

Josué studied a B.Sc in Atmospheric Sciences (meteology/mathematics applied) at the University of Veracruz (UV) and during his degree he did two short research stays at the Center for Atmospheric Sciences, UNAM supported by the Mexican Academy of Sciences. In 2001 he moved to the the Mexican Institute of Water Technology IMTA) (Jiutepec, Morelos, México) to carry out his B.Sc. thesis ''(Monitoring biomass burning with GOES-8 images in Southeast Mexico'') funded by the Mexican Council for Science and Technology - CONACYT to earn his degree (2003). This work was one of the firsts produced in Mexico to detect/monitor forest fires using remote sensing from geostationary satellites and was used operatively for many years. As a result of this research, two book chapters were published (one by the UNAM). In 2005, he moved to Bilbao to earn a PhD (2012) at the Dpt. of Applied Physics II, University of the Basque Country - UPV/EHU with a thesis entitled "Application of statistical techniques to the study of environmental and ecosystemic problems". Although between 2006 and 2007 he carried out a guest-student research stay (''computational climate simulation of the Early Jurassic using the CLIMBER-3?") for seven months at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research - PIK (Germany). His PhD thesis was a mix among the application of different signal processing and statistical methods, climatology and marine ecology with a focus to understand some phenomena related with the impact of climate in fisheries research. As a result of this, four JCR-Q1 papers were published and several works were presented in international scientific events. Moreover, from 2009 to 2012, he worked as a research officer (pre- and post-doctoral) in the topics ''analysis of temporal and spatial stochastic process and theoretical issues in the signal extraction from environmental databases'' at the Dept. of Econometrics and Statistics (Applied Economics III), UPV/EHU. He combined the last part of his PhD thesis with this job and he started to work with computational statistics, data analysis and gained experience in the use of R, as user and scientific programmer, during this period he published the R package W2CWM2C (A Graphical Tool for Wavelet Correlation Analysis) in CRAN and its respective paper in the JCR-Q1 Journal CiSE\---Computing in Science and Engineering.

In 2013, he worked as scientific programmer and associate researcher in ''operational production chain of ocean forecasting systems'' for the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC), Lecce, Italy. Despite the relatively short time in this position, he gained enough experience to handle large amount of data from climate simulations using some computational tools (including HPC). The computational skills acquired during this time have been relevant to develop successfully other research activities, e.g. publications, projects, and to obtain other research positions. In 2014 he worked as a postdoctoral researcher for the European FP7 BASE project at the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), Basque Excellence Research Center (BERC) and Unit of Excellence María de Maeztu. One of his responsibilities in this position were to handle large climate data sets from climate simulations to estimate and predict heat wave events for the next decades in Spain and to include uncertainty in the adaptation cost estimations in Integrated Assessment Models. In 2016, he got a three-year Basque Government Postdoctoral research fellowship and moved again to carry out a part of his research (''Quantifying -through statistical and signal processing methods- abrupt climate changes during the Last Glacial period: from global to regional scales'' [ABRUPT]) at the UMR CNRS 5805 EPOC (Environnements et Paléoenvironnements Océaniques et Continentaux), Université de Bordeaux, France. In 04/2018 he came back to BC3 to finish his postdoctoral project. This three-year period was highly productivity with a strong international projection and collaborations (France, USA, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Chile; most of which are maintained over time): 14 JCR/Scopus Q1 and 2 indexed in JCR/Scopus (7 as first author and 2 as second/corresponding author); 28 presentations in international scientific events; and the R package BINCOR (estimated correlation between two irregular (climate) time series) published in CRAN and its respective paper published in the R Journal. During 2019 he worked as research officer ("personal investigador contratado doctor - PIC") for the H2020 Interreg project MOSES at the Institute of Public Economics (Econometrics Research Group), UPV/EHU in Bilbao, and since 2019/2020 he is also associate researcher at the BC3 and at the Arctic Research centre (ARCUM) (Umea University, Sweden). In 2020 he was associate researcher at DeustoTech - Deusto Institute of Technology, Faculty of Engineering (University of Deusto) in Bilbao. In 2021, he moved to the prestigious University of Salamanca (the oldest university in Spain and one of the oldest universities in the world) to work as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Unit of Excellence, Economic Management for Sustainability (GECOS).

In 2012 he obtained the ANECA accreditation as Assistant Professor and more recently in 2014 and 2017 he received the distinction of (Mexican) National Researcher System (SNI Level I) for the periods 2015-2017 and 2018-2021. In sum, he has published 34 JCR/Scopus papers (17 of these as a first/lead author and 5 of these as single author) in international peer-reviewed scientific journals (e.g., Fisheries Fisheries, Quaternary Research, Computing in Science and Engineering (CiSE), Physica A, Earth and Planetary Science Letters, Applied Energy, R Journal, Nonlinear Dynamics, Ecological Informatics, Nature Scientific Reports, etc.), two book chapters and two books, and has presented several posters and given numerous talks around the world. He was guest editor (together with Dr. Matias Frugone) for the Special Issue (2018) in Paleoclimates in Iberoamerica, Boletín Geológico y Minero (Spain) indexed in Scopus and WoS ESCI, and from 2021 he is Review Editor for the JCR/Scopus (Q1) Journal Frontiers in the Marine Science, and is regular reviewer in several international peer-reviewed scientific journals (e.g. Physica A, CiSE, Palaeo3, Quaternary Science Reviews, Environmetrics, Earth-Science Reviews, etc.). He is a Free Software Enthusiasts and has published four R packages available on CRAN. He is currently co-supervising a BSc (in computational sciences) thesis at the UADY (Mexico) and a junior postdoctoral researcher (''inference of regional patterns affected by ENSO dynamics'') at the INRIA-Bordeaux (France). In 2019 he got a MSCA 2018 ``Seal of Excellence granted by the European Commission for his project ''QuantiFying the impact of human-made lAnd uSe on loCal and regIoNal climATE: lessons learned from the Maya Classic Collapse (FASCINATE)''. Recently (08/2021) he was shortlisted in the reserve list in the prestigious Ramón y Cajal postdoctoral fellowship (Spain).
