BC3 has been officially recognised as a “María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence” by the State Research Agency, a public agency attached to the Ministry of Science and Innovation. This is the second time that the institute obtains this recognition after receiving it in 2018.
The María de Maeztu accreditation recognises research units and centres that stand out for being the best centres in the world in their respective fields of research. Being awarded a “María de Maeztu Excellence Unit” accreditation is a recognition of scientific research excellence that includes an annual funding of half a million euros for a period of 4 years.
Sustainability through cutting-edge multidisciplinary research
The world is in a state of climate emergency, a challenge that needs to be addressed from different disciplines to provide the necessary knowledge, methodologies and tools to ensure that decisions address climate action and lead us to a more equitable and just society by promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
BC3’s “María de Maeztu” project proposes a scientific project with the aim of supporting science-based solutions to tackle environmental challenges arising from climate change, with the vision of promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly human development.
“Climate change is one of the most important challenges we have ever faced as humanity. It is, therefore, crucial to take the necessary urgent measures based on scientific knowledge,” says María José Sanz, BC3’s scientific director.
The implementation of the “María de Maeztu” Strategic Plan will also have an important impact on the alignment of the centre’s scientific objectives with the Horizon Europe programme by further promoting a collaborative and translational research approach that is more internationalised, more gender-balanced and even more committed to the principles of Responsible Research and Innovation. In addition, it will promote scientific training and the development of research careers in all multidisciplinary stages, as well as the strengthening of the internal structures to facilitate knowledge and technology transfer.
Centres and units of excellence
A total of 9 units have been awarded the “María de Maeztu” accreditation in this edition, together with 9 centres that have been accredited with the “Severo Ochoa” accreditation. An international scientific committee of renowned researchers was in charge of the evaluation and selection process, which analysed both the scientific results and the strategic programmes of the centres and units, with the aim of highlighting all the candidates that stand out for their excellence.
