PhD students at the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3)

The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) opens a competitive call for applications to two PhD contracts to develop the doctoral thesis on issues related to the risks and trade-offs associated to the transition to a low carbon economy. The applicants will develop the thesis in the context of an existing European Commission research project. The research will be conducted at BC3 but also in collaboration with other international research institutions.

Specifically the applicant would:

  • Develop a doctoral thesis in parallel to the tasks associated to the European project.
  • Work with other team members in a long-term and strategic project for BC3 using an existing Global Integrated Assessment model at BC3.
  • Progressively, publish high-impact, peer-reviewed research in international scientific journals.
  • Contribute to Low Carbon research line at BC3.


The applicant should have a degree in Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Earth Sciences, Computer Science or similar, with a solid background in quantitative methods and programming. Having a Master degree is highly value, but it is not compulsory.

Other relevant skills:

  • Experience on modeling.
  • Experience handling large amounts of data.
  • Good knowledge of the energy sector.
  • Good interpersonal as well communication skills (both written and oral) in English.
  • Flexibility to collaborate in existing research projects.

Tenure: The position will be for a period of two years with a possibility for extending it for two more years upon a positive assessment of the performance.

Location: Basque Centre for Climate Change, Bilbao (Spain).

The BC3-Basque Centre for Climate Change is a Research Centre based in Bilbao which aims to contribute to long term research on the causes and consequences of climate change in order to foster the creation of knowledge in this multidisciplinary science. This center is part of the network of BERCs - Basque Excellence Research Centers supported by the Basque Government.

BC3 seeks to be a world-class climate change research center aimed at informing decision-making at the Basque, Spanish, and International level by integrating natural and social sciences to address the socio-economic implications of global climate change.

This synergy is realized through our research on low carbon transitions, natural environment and ecosystem services, health, economics and climate policy.

Following the successful completion of its launching phase, BC3 is now looking for a new Scientific Director with excellent scientific quality paired with proven human resources leadership that will lead the consolidation of the center for the future years. Applicants will have a background in either physical or the social sciences but with a strong commitment to the study of climate change.

The Scientific Director should be a person with a proven track record in the area of climate change and at least 15 years research experience after the completion of the PhD. He/ She should also have experience in managing a research institution and have international reputation in the field. The candidates may also demonstrate a record of invited presentations in well-established international conferences, granted projects, awards, prizes etc.

The position will carry competitive salary and excellent conditions of work. The envisaged starting date of the position will be summer 2015.

Only researchers with a solid research track, senior level and international research experience will be considered.

Position Requirements:

Recognized scientific excellence in the field of climate change:

  • The Scientific Director should be a person with a proven track record in the area of climate change and at least 15 years research experience after the completion of the PhD.
  • Leadership in human resources in science – at least 5 years track record in managing science and research teams on various levels and skills and experience in supporting and nurturing new scientists.
  • Demonstrated experience and a long-term successful track record in obtaining research funding and managing and directing scientific research programs, including a commitment to scientific excellence and accompanying energy, enthusiasm, and innovative thinking necessary to facilitate and foster research efforts at the forefront of science.
  • Strong sense of responsibility, initiative and self-motivation along with an ambition to develop the research center to a world-class standard.
  • Proven capacity to take decisions, both at strategic and operational level.
  • Language: English proficiency.
