Short CV

Mireia Valle’s research focuses in biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services; with a special interest on climate change impacts on coastal ecosystems. She was graduated in Environmental Science in the University of Girona and she got her PhD in the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU) in Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning and Management with International Mention distinction in 2014, which was awarded with an excellent-Cum Laude and the PhD. Extraordinary Award 2016/2017.

During her PhD, entitled “Seagrass meadows under a changing climate: habitat modelling, restoration and monitoring”, she collaborated in several project within a strong research line focused on global change, biodiversity and habitat modelling, and applications to European directives implementation. With her PhD Mireia Valle gained broad experience in habitat modelling and assessment of the effect of climate change on marine ecosystems. She developed a strong background on ecological modelling, future projections and mapping of coastal species and habitats using remote sensing tools.

After finishing her PhD, she worked as research leader in the Universidad Laica Eloy Alfaro de Manabí (ULEAM) in Ecuador, leading a project which assessed the functional ecology of rocky reef ecosystems along the Ecuadorian coast through integral monitoring of corals, macroalgae, and equinoderms. The aim of the research was to improve the understanding of the status of these ecosystems and make recommendations for conservation planning. During the period she expended in Ecuador (2014-2016), she also worked as associate professor in the Marine Science Faculty from the ULEAM teaching a course about Aquatic ecosystem conservation and she supervised two undergraduate students from the same faculty. As a research leader in the ULEAM, she participated in the creation of the National Marine Research Network (REIMAR) promoted by the national marine institution of Ecuador (Secretaría Técnica del Mar). She helped defining the research line concerning social and environmental impacts in the marine environment, including climate change impacts.

In addition to these accomplishments, Mireia Valle was selected IPBES Fellow to participate in the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Regional Assessment of the Americas. The objective of this initiative is to provide relevant data to support decision making for conservation policy and management worldwide. She collaborated on Chapter 5 of the Americas assessment, “Current and Future Interactions between Nature and Society”.
