Marta Olazabal

As attractors of services and population, urban areas need to move from rhetoric to action in the field of climate change action and transformation to sustainability. Taking advantage of the concentration of knowledge and innovation, the opportunity relies on cities and local communities. This complex challenge not only involves technologies deployment, but also the generation of the conditions required to engage society and other actors in the process of change. In this regard, my research aims to facilitate governance towards urban sustainability and resilience in the context of climate change. I am particularly interested in tools and processes that uncover the complexity of urban systems and help to overcome the barriers to a more sustainable and resilient development.

Short CV

I am a Research Fellow at the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) where I lead the Adaptation Research Group. I have a background on Environmental Engineering (Bsc 2004, MSc 2009, School of Engineering of Bilbao) and a PhD on Land Economy (University of Cambridge, 2015). I moved to BC3 after working 8 years in research and consultancy. I have undertaken international scientific stays in Germany (IÖR, Dresden - 2005), The Netherlands (IVAM, Amsterdam - 2006), United Kingdom (University of Newcastle – 2010, Univ. Southampton – 2018), Canada (McGill University - 2016) and Portugal (Universidade Nova, CENSE, May 2019). In 2011, I co-founded and chaired the Urban Resilience Researchers Network (URNet) until 2019. I contributed to the foundation of IPAM (International Platform on Adaptation Metrics), where I chair the Committee on Cities and represent BC3 in the Steering Committee. I am contributing author of the IPCC AR6 and reviewer of the Adaptation Gap Report 2021. My scientific production includes more than 60 scientific contributions in a diversity of peer-reviewed journals and other broader audience outlets. I am interested in urban sustainability and climate governance, creating and applying usable knowledge in systems thinking and approaches that bridge science and policy. My current research focuses on understanding how adaptation might be enabled in cities worldwide.
